Statements from some of our 350 CALM customers
“We chose CALM as our archival software in 2000 and use it for accessioning, cataloguing and the monitoring of enquiries. Our catalogue is visible online at http://archives.wellcome.ac.uk.
We have found it simple and intuitive, delivering ISAD(G) cataloguing without a need for complex staff training. Our readers, too, find the search interface intuitive and it has made accessible many areas of our collection that were underused before becoming searchable online. At the same time it has been powerful and versatile, capable of interaction with other and varied applications. We have found particular value in the ease with which CALM imports and exports data in different formats: it has enabled us to ingest large amounts of retroconverted data from Excel spreadsheets, to export data in customisable tabbed text for import to various Office applications, and to export data in XML for harvesting by our MARC-based library system, the last enabling us to make use of the library system's online ordering module to request archive material. A particular strength of the application is its active user group, with development priorities set by Axiell in collaboration with annual user group meetings: the development of the system to date, as a result, has marched closely in step with the development of users' needs." "We sought a comprehensive system that was tailored to an archival institution of our size,
with all the needs that we have, when it concerns the complete archive image data, authority records, flexible registration system and provide opportunities to register also at item level as individual documents or photographs. We keep our stocks of various archival repositories in different depots, which provides additional requirements for a system when it comes to storage management, location information e.t.c.. We also examined a more rational lending system than what we currently use. After a thorough inventory of the Swedish market and after testing CALM it seems that CALM is the system that best meets those needs. We believe that CALM will facilitate us in our future work, both in terms of internal working procedures and in touch with our users." “The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust's original brief was for an archive cataloguing system that would handle both twelfth-century local records and the videos and other archives relating to Royal Shakespeare Company's most recent productions.
We were impressed with the flexibility of Axiell's CALM for Archives, and the system's ease of use has allowed staff to use the system confidently after only limited training. Axiell's positive response to our suggestion for a new module to document theatre productions led to the development of CALM's Performance Module which now carries the Royal Shakespeare Company's Performance Database, an internationally-used online resource working alongside, and linking to, the CALM archive catalogue.“ Sylvia Morris Head of Shakespeare Collections Shakespeare Centre Library and Archive |
