Lund, Sweden, 30 March, 2016 – Axiell, the world’s number one supplier of collections management technology, today announces the Swedish Film Institute (SFI) has selected its Adlib solution to manage and share its film collection, including the posters, manuscripts and images tied to each movie. The initiative by the SFI is part of a government-backed, archival project to preserve the history of Sweden’s film heritage and make it more accessible.
The SFI’s archive originates from The Swedish Film Society, founded in 1933, and is one of the oldest in the world, containing more than 25,000 films, stills, posters and manuscripts. It also holds details such as title, country of production, release date, production companies, distributors and cast, on all Swedish and foreign films ever shown in Swedish cinemas.
Adlib collections management software replaces an in-house archiving system at the SFI, providing a highly flexible, open platform for managing the entire collection, including both digital and non-digital content.
Critically, Adlib ensures full compliance to EU standards – a key reason why the SFI selected this over other systems. Axiell is the first supplier to include EN 15907, the European standard for cataloguing film archives that specifies best practices for structuring meta data related to film.
By making meta data more structured and integrated, the SFI can easily expand its reach and promote and share the Swedish film heritage with other film institutes both in Europe and across the world, as the EU standard is applied globally. The current database Svensk Filmdatabas is being upgraded and aims to launch in early 2017.
Using Adlib, the SFI can also strengthen its approach to digitisation by improving the web service they provide for the collection. Adlib also supports multi-lingual operations and full integration with other systems.
Adam Schatz, Managing Director of Axiell ALM, said, “Managing both digital and non-digital assets and moving entire collections online presents complex challenges for institutions like the SFI and we are very glad they have chosen to partner with Axiell for this project. Through our extensive experience in this field, we have proven that Axiell can enable institutions like SFI to manage their digitisation strategies.”
Mathias Rosengren, MD of Film Heritage department at SFI, said, “Because Axiell’s collection management system meets the EU Standard for cataloguing collections we can take a best practice approach to collection management, with a technology solution that supports open data and enables the SFI to manage multiple collections within the same system. Adlib is used by other film archives across the world, giving us confidence we have selected the right solution to support our strategy to preserve our extensive archive and make it accessible to anyone.
