Manchester, UK, 26 October 2017 – Axiell, the leading vendor globally of collections management software to archives and museums, today announces that its Adlib solution has been selected by the Mary Rose Trust to manage its collection of over 19,000 artefacts from, or relating to, the Mary Rose, the 16th Century warship and flagship of Henry VIII raised from the seabed in October 1982.
The new collections management system will be used to manage the wealth of material that was recovered from the ship, including artefacts, timbers, samples and human remains, as well as the substantial archive of material that relate to the archaeological excavation and subsequent research. The archive is currently being digitised as part of a project made possible by a grant from the Designated Development Fund of Arts Council England.
The Axiell system is fully SPECTRUM compliant and flexible so that it can meet the demands of managing a variety of different collection types. Importantly, for the Mary Rose Trust, the system enables collaborative contributions from the Conservation Team and the Curators.
The Mary Rose Trust selected Axiell as part of their ambition to further develop their collection and archive, with Adlib meeting their demands now, whilst being flexible enough to adapt to their future needs. Adlib is also able to handle the multiple collection types of the Trust in a single system. The project also includes the Adlib Internet Server, which enables the publication of collections to the web, and the Axiell Collections Web UI, which provides web access to the collections management system. The web interface enables staff to enter data and work with their CMS from any location via a desktop or mobile device, and facilitates the collaborative working that was crucial to the project requirements.
Adlib is built on a foundation of international standards and is currently used by more than 1300 institutions worldwide.
Ben Sullivan, Head of EMEA at Axiell ALM, said, “We are proud to be working with the Mary Rose Trust to support collections of such historical significance, and implementing Adlib, Adlib Internet Server and the web UI to help take their collections management to a new level.”
Alastair Miles, Collections Manager at the Mary Rose trust, also commented, “We are really excited to be working with Axiell as the supplier of our new collections management system. Adlib is a fantastic CMS that will support our needs, as well as our work with the collection, going forward.”
The Mary Rose and thousands of her artefacts are on display at the Mary Rose Museum in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. More information is available at www.maryrose.org.

About the Mary Rose Trust
The Mary Rose Trust is a limited charitable trust, formed in 1979. It is responsible for conserving and displaying the Mary Rose hull and her unique collection of artefacts for this and future generations. It is also responsible for developing the museum as a world-class visitor experience and as a scientific and educational resource. For those who are unable to visit the Mary Rose Museum, the Trust offers an extensive and innovative outreach programme.
The Mary Rose provides the finest insight into life 500 years ago. It tells the story of the ship and her crew through their personal possessions and their professional tools.
The President of the Mary Rose Trust is HRH The Prince of Wales, who has been involved with the Mary Rose ever since his first dive on the wreck back in 1974. Prince Charles continues to follow the project with a very close interest, and has played an active role in our objective of reuniting the Mary Rose with her incredible collection of artefacts.
