Keep CALM and STEAM Ahead with new family visitor activities

The National Motor Museum Trust (NMMT) at Beaulieu has been awarded £72,800 from Arts Council England to unlock information about collections and develop an exciting and imaginative new range of family activities for visitors.

The new funding, which is the result of a successful bid to the Arts Council England Designation Development Fund, will improve access to collections information under the Keep CALM and STEAM Ahead project.

The project will extend the use of Axiell’s CALM collections management system at the Museum and support research on little-used parts of the vast collections, including technical material held in the Motoring Reference Library and Object Collection.

Unlocking this fascinating information will provide content for the Museum to create a range of new school and family activities. It will build on the Museum’s Education Service and support education programmes linked to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) in response to recent changes in the National Curriculum.

A creative take on STEAM has been adopted for the project, which will use the newly researched material to inspire a range of lively Automotive Steampunk-themed family activities over the next two years. Visitors to the Museum will be able to explore the collections in imaginative ways such as story-telling sessions, a Magical Mechanisms family trail and opportunities to dress up in full Steampunk style.

Andrea Bishop, Director of Collections for the National Motor Museum, said: “I take particular pleasure in announcing this funding support from Arts Council England, as it will reveal fresh insights into the captivating history of motoring and deliver engaging outcomes for our audiences. Behind the scenes, the grant will help us make better use of our existing collections management system and research under-used parts of the collections. This will unlock a wealth of material, making it accessible to the wider public for the first time, and create new learning programmes and playful Automotive Steampunk activities.”

The National Motor Museum Trust’s collection of over 250 vehicles is world-famous, along with its extensive range of motoring artefacts, photographic images, specialist reference library and film and video library. The Photographic Collection contains 1.2 million images covering private and commercial vehicles, motoring events, personalities and manufacturing. The photographs document the history of motoring from the earliest steam cars of the late 19th Century to new models being launched today.
