Axiell’s Film Archive Collections Management Software Chosen by Eye Filmmuseum

Eye Filmmuseum opts for Axiell’s out-of-the-box solution that has become the worldwide standard for film archive collections management

Maarssen, Netherlands 22 February 2022 – Axiell, the world’s leading software and services provider for the cultural sector, announces that Eye Filmmuseum has chosen Axiell’s collections management platform, Axiell Collections, to manage their vast collection to the international EN 15907 film archive standard. The Archive has also chosen two integrated Axiell Collections add-on products to deepen their use of the system. Axiell Move will be used to handle object movements across their storage facility which holds over 250,000 film cans and 600,000 other objects (posters, photos, books etc.). Axiell’s Collections Online offering will be used to create an intranet that facilitates internal search and reading requests for their 32,000 film books.

Eye Filmmuseum curates an ever-growing sample of film history, from classics and blockbusters to cult films. This collection includes over 90,000 posters, 440,000 photographs and other visual materials, sheet music, pre-cinema devices, filmmaker archives and an extensive library collection. The Archive prioritizes accessibility, sustainable preservation, and contextualization of Dutch film. An impressive 15 percent of the collection has already been digitized, and can be found via the Archive’s channels on YouTube, Eye Film Player and Open Beelden.

In their software search, Eye Filmmuseum was looking to acquire a robust collections management system (CMS) to replace their current bespoke solution. Axiell Collections provides out of the box film archive management functionality, and its flexibility enables a range of customizations to support institution-specific goals like the ingest of digitised collection items. Moreover, Axiell’s focus on sustainable technology solutions and their large film archive customer community gave Eye Filmmuseum the confidence they needed to choose Axiell as a partner for future digital success.

Ernst van Velzen, Information Manager of the Eye Filmmuseum says, “We work closely with other film archives around the world, a significant number of which have made the move to Axiell Collections. It gives us great confidence to use the same system as other innovative film archives. Aligning our technology with these institutions allows us to collaborate and share experiences to enrich our mutual use of the system.”

Eye Filmmuseum is looking at additional ways to create connections by leveraging Axiell’s Open API. This potential will be explored after the initial implementation of Axiell Collections.

Joel Sommerfeldt, CEO of Axiell Group, comments, “Because of its purpose-built functionality and ability to handle a large number of records, Axiell Collections is seen as the worldwide standard for film archive collections management which is evidenced by our growing number of film archive customers. Eye Filmmuseum is a significant cultural heritage partner in the Netherlands and we’re delighted to welcome them to our growing Film Archive user community.”
