Axiell solution drives digitisation project for landmark Scandinavian cultural collection

Manchester, UK, 9 January 2017 – Axiell, the leading vendor globally of collections management software to archives and museums, today announces that The Swedish History Museum has selected Axiell Collections to manage its extensive collection of more than 10 million items, including Europe’s largest collection from the Viking Age, and to make the objects available digitally to communities and other institutions across the world.

Axiell Collections forms a key part of the museum’s digitisation strategy, providing web-based access to their collections management system and enabling all artefacts to be catalogued, shared and made available digitally. The collection at the Swedish History Museum grows by approximately 20,000 objects every year through the museum’s connection with the Swedish Archival organisation, so the advanced accessions capability of the Axiell solution was critical.

Using Axiell Collections The Swedish History Museum can rapidly enrich its collections information to move into a modern, digital world that makes culture and natural heritage available to all. Because Axiell supports industry standards for cataloguing and managing metadata, the Museum can easily share its collection with anyone, anywhere, and share knowledge and ways of working with similar museums in other countries.

Wilhelm Lagercrantz, Digital Development at the Swedish History Museum, said “It is amazing to be able to tie collections together with the thousands of others worldwide. A search that starts at the Swedish Historical Museum may lead to other archives, institutions, countries and even continents. We are excited about our collaboration with Axiell to enrich our collections and work with digital solutions in new ways.”

Joel Sommerfeldt, President and CEO of Axiell Group, said “The Swedish History Museum offers a wealth of historical and cultural artefacts and has a special place in the Scandinavian community. This is an exciting project for Axiell, providing a solution that will bring collections such as the Viking Age to life for a global audience, while enabling The Swedish History Museum to realise its digital vision for collections management.”
