The Alfie Norville Gem and Mineral Museum joins Arizona State Museum as a fellow EMu user within the University of Arizona
Toronto, Canada, March 23 2022 – Axiell, the world’s leading software and services provider for the cultural sector, today announces the expansion of its EMu Collections Management System within the University of Arizona. The Alfie Norville Gem and Mineral Museum joins Arizona State Museum as a fellow EMu user within the University of Arizona. EMu has gained international acclaim with natural history institutions for it’s flexible and comprehensive management of multidisciplinary collections. The adoption of EMu will further establish the Alfie Norville Gem and Mineral Museum as a world class institution focused on digital innovation to power mineral and gem education and outreach.
In a refurbished historic courthouse just Southwest of the University’s main campus, the Alfie Norville Gem and Mineral Museum houses over 20,000 specimens, the majority of which are mineral samples. Since their move to the courthouse in 2021, a large portion of their collection remains in storage. With the adoption of EMu, the Museum intends to lay the foundations for a strong collections catalogue that will empower their missions of education and outreach into the wider public and research community.
“EMu offers a sustainable way for us to reach our goals and fulfill our missions,” says Susan Leib, Curator/Collections Manager of the Alfie Norville Gem and Mineral Museum. “The software will help us facilitate research and education programs run out of our world class research lab on site that empowers hands-on learning. Furthermore, only a very small percentage of our collection is currently on display. We want to swap out 20% of what’s on display every year so repeat visitors can see something different. EMu offers the platform required to facilitate this rotation of samples.”
The Museum’s broader goal is to create a database that can be shared and linked with other institutions.
