Colonial Williamsburg Foundation selects Axiell as partner to develop archaeological research and collections management database

Toronto Canada September 07 2016 – Axiell, the world’s number one supplier of collections management technology, today announces its first project with The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation in Williamsburg, Virginia. The Foundation has selected Axiell’s EMu for data management of its Archaeological Collections.

The Foundation encourages national and international audiences to learn from the past through the preservation, restoration and presentation of 18th-century Williamsburg and the study, interpretation and teaching of America’s founding democratic principles.

The ability to customize the EMu system to meet the specific requirements of the Archaeological Collections was a primary driver in the decision to work with Axiell. Managing these world-renowned collections and making them available both to researchers and the public is key for the Foundation in achieving its educational and research mission.

EMu is a comprehensive and flexible collections management system that can accommodate the requirements of any collecting institution. For this project, Axiell is expanding this solution’s capabilities to accommodate the complex research requirements for the Foundation’s archaeologists. EMu is widely acknowledged to be the pre-eminent system for natural history collections and is used by more than 400 institutions worldwide.

Adam Schatz, Managing Director of Axiell ALM, said, “EMu has been at the forefront of collections management for more than three decades and is a true testament to our dedication to evolving systems that will support modern institutions. Our new contract with The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, won through a highly competitive process, affirms our ability to meet the requirements of leading institutions across the world, and comes on the back of a number of significant contracts in 2016.

Ronald Hurst, Vice President, Collections, Conservation, & Museums and Chief Curator at The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, said, “Our archaeological collections form the historical basis for the Foundation’s educational, research, and architectural programs. EMu will allow us to maintain a high level of research and conservation of the collections as well as customize how we manage and share these assets with visitors and researchers.”
