University of Melbourne selects Axiell as partner for groundbreaking initiative for collection based research and learning

Melbourne, Australia January 19 2016 – Axiell, the leading vendor globally of collections management software to archives, libraries and museums, is pleased to announce that the University of Melbourne has selected EMu, one of Axiell’s suite of enterprise collection management solutions. With EMu the Faculty of Arts will be able to integrate current and future teaching and learning possibilities with the University’s existing collections management frameworks, enabling greater synergies and collaboration. The project is seen as a new avenue for development and communication about collections-based research, teaching and learning.

The project is part of the Arts West Redevelopment, the most significant infrastructure project undertaken by the Faculty of Arts at the University of Melbourne in over 40 years. The building will be a learning building, designed to support new models of teaching in the humanities and social sciences. The building pairs infrastructure and technology with new active learning pedagogies in a way that is unique.

“The rich cultural collections of the University will now be an integral part of our education to the benefit of our researchers and students. This focus on active learning pedagogies, with dedicated facilities to support object-based learning will enable us to improve student experience and learning outcomes,” says Amelia Scurry Manager, Executive Communication and Liaison and Project Manager, Arts West Redevelopment.

Through use of EMu, the University’s rich Cultural Collections will be integrated into research, teaching and learning, and engagement activities. At any given time the new Arts West building will support around 150 objects designed to enrich, guide, develop and extend learning. The combination of Loans, Locations and External Movements records ensures that every detail of any object’s location, both onsite and in transit, is recorded and managed. These records provide easy access to contact information for all responsible parties, and the integrated Tasks system allows automatic reminders to be sent out for each deadline or project milestone. Not only does this make it efficient for the staff and students who plan to work with the interactive exhibitions, it also provides peace of mind to the lending institutions entrusting the objects into the care of the Faculty.

“The connection of cultural heritage to education is one of the key trends that we often discuss with our customers. Universities, archives and museums have a wealth of knowledge and objects that can enrich education on all levels. The University of Melbourne is visionary with this project and this new building with integrated technology solutions is an advanced solution which is developed to provide students with a good experience. We are proud to be part of that, “says Andrew Brown, Head of Asia Pacific Operations.
