The National Library of Norway to establish audiovisual management system for the future using Axiell’s integrated technology stack, incorporating collections management, digital asset management and workflow automation.
Oslo, Norway, 5 December 2022 – Axiell, the world’s leading software and services provider for the cultural sector, announces that the National Library of Norway (NLN) has chosen Axiell Collections for collections management, Axiell’s workflow automation tool, Axiell Flow, to ensure efficiency in daily operations, and Axiell DAMS powered by Piction, Axiell’s Digital Asset Management system, to streamline management of all types of audiovisual digital content.
The NLN – Norway’s shared memory – aims to be the premier source of knowledge relating to Norway and all things Norwegian. By preserving cultural heritage and the published word, they provide a basis for documentation, research and learning, helping to foster a sense of identity and belonging for Norwegian citizens. Since 2020, the NLN has digitized paper materials, photographs, moving images and audio recordings from libraries, archives, and museums (LAM) across Norway. The library was looking for a multifaceted and flexible solution based on off-the-shelf products to help preserve and manage its already vast collection of motion pictures, television, radio, recorded sound and images in one system.
Svein Arne Solbakk, Department Director for Cultural Heritage Digitization, says, “Axiell’s software will help us ensure consistency of management across collections, make workflows more effective, and enable sustainable management of extensive backlogs and an expected future increase in both born-digital publications and archive material. The software will also be an important precondition for more efficient and standardized access to and sharing of metadata and digital content with the LAM sector, researchers, and all other end-users. We look forward to establishing an audiovisual management system for the future in collaboration with Axiell”.
The NLN holds Norway’s largest collection of audiovisual materials and contains over 13,000,000 objects. As a result of the library’s digitization program that was established in 2006, large parts of the NLN’s total collection are now digitalized and can be viewed online. This includes 90 % of all historical book publications in the Norwegian language, more than 70 % of all Norwegian newspaper editions and the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation’s historical radio archive. It also covers large quantities of photographs, films, sound recordings and periodicals.
Malcolm Howitt, Vice President Sales Axiell, comments, “We are excited about the prospect of working with NLN on this project, that brings a wide range of audio-visual material into a single Axiell system and supports the library in its mission to bring more digital content to its user communities. We look forward to building on the work that has already started to deliver a system that meets the immediate requirements of the project, but also provides a strong platform for the future, as the needs of NLN change in line with evolving digital agendas”.
