Lund, Sweden, 10 October 2024 – Axiell, the world’s leading software and services provider for the cultural sector, has released a trial of its AI Tool for collections database enrichment. The Tool provides curatorial and collections management teams with cutting-edge technology to analyze and enhance Collections and Thesauri records over 10 times faster than a human, supporting records enrichment with speed at an unprecedented scale. To ensure alignment with market needs, the Tool is developed in close collaboration with Axiell’s customer community.
“This technology will transform how our museum and archive clients work with their vast stores of collections data – much of which is at risk of being overlooked due to sheer quantity and limited resources. AI supports curatorial and collections care tasks at a scale that would simply not be achievable with manual effort. At the same time, our Tool provisions for an adjustable level of human oversight, ensuring the perfect blend of technology-powered performance with human intelligence,” says Maria Wasing, Axiell’s President and CEO. “We envision our AI Tool as a trusted companion for museum and archive teams as they work to improve data integrity, searchability, and depth of their collections’ records. This is the transformative innovation that the market has been waiting for.”
Axiell’s AI Tool identifies crucial entities within unstructured collections data, such as people, places, organizations, and keywords, and links these entities to Wikidata-enriched Thesauri records as a central reference for cataloging. The enriched metadata is written back simply and safely to the Collections Management System (CMS), with the option for human validation at every step. The result is a collections database enriched with interlinked records that provide enhanced context for stakeholders like staff, researchers, and members of the public as they engage with the material of the collection.
“Launching a trial of our AI Tool marks the next step in bringing this technology to market. Our AI Tool has been developed with input from several client institutions, including the British Film Institute and the Britten Pears Arts Archive. The trial launch allows the market to demo the technology themselves, getting a firsthand look at the power of our AI Tool to augment their collections databases in real time,” says Rene van den Heuvel, Axiell’s leading Product Manager for AI development.
