Bringing the Tim Russert archive to life with digital storytelling

Tim Russert: One Man’s Impact on the Nation is an online exhibition created in partnership with History Associates, Inc. (HAI) and John Carroll University (JCU), which houses the Tim Russert archive. A 1972 graduate of JCU, Russert was an Emmy Award-winning journalist whose career and legacy are celebrated in this digital experience. The exhibit acts as a testament to the significance of preserving archives for the historical record, and how technology can bring these stories to the public through compelling multimedia narratives.

The Tim Russert online exhibit was first conceived by JCU to honor Russert’s legacy as an iconic journalist and namesake of the Tim Russert Department of Communication. Led by Dr. Malia McAndrew, professor of history at JCU, and developed in collaboration with HAI team, more than 50 students in U.S. history courses worked to organize and curate 156 linear feet of materials and 17 years of digital assets from the Russert estate. Under the guidance of industry-leading professionals, this collaboration provided students with hands-on experience in archival research, curation, and digital storytelling.

Technology Overview

HAI and JCU selected Axiell’s CultureConnect product to host the online exhibition because it fulfilled four key requirements:

  • Robust design tools
  • Easy-to-use content management platform
  • Analytics
  • Accessibility

Robust Design Tools

Both HAI and JCU understood the importance of compelling design in attracting and retaining the public’s interest in the online exhibition. Given the breadth and depth of the Tim Russert story, the teams chose to use CultureConnect’s Advanced Interactive tool.

The Advanced Interactive online exhibition is organized into 4 primary themes:

  1. Life at a Glance
  2. Strong Foundations
  3. Meet the Press
  4. Beyond the Studio

Within each theme are dozens of related stories. To accommodate these diverse stories, a unique digital content strategy was created for each theme to ensure that the archival materials and related stories were showcased in the best light. To maintain cohesion, the style of the app pulls from the John Carroll University branding while carefully folding in archival materials as design flourishes throughout the experience. Deploying these archival design flourishes helps to add depth to the app design, the audience’s understanding of Tim Russert, and visual access to the archive itself.

Easy-to-use content management platform

The CultureConnect product was an excellent fit for JCU’s maintenance needs. CultureConnect’s product is an annual subscription that includes all customer support and technical maintenance by a dedicated development team. This means that JCU can focus on their content and online exhibition marketing without getting into the weeds of technical maintenance.

The CultureConnect content management platform is web-based and no code, meaning that JCU team members can work from home or on campus and do not need a technical background to add or edit content.

Now the JCU team can evolve the online exhibition 24/7 as archival research and stories develop over time.

Analytics

A built-in analytics dashboard helps students and faculty to understand how the online exhibition is performing. Data points are collected by GA4 (Google Analytics) and displayed in an easy to read dashboard. These metrics help JCU understand which stories are most interesting to their audience, which elements may need to be improved, and the data to continually iterate on the digital strategy as their audience evolves.

The CultureConnect platform’s analytics dashboard provides valuable insights into user behavior so that your team can evolve to meet audience interests. Key analytics include:

  • Number of users
  • Session length
  • Top visited pages
  • Bounce rate
  • And a variety of custom metrics if you activate forms, games, and voting!

Accessibility

Essential to the program launch was thinking through access to the online exhibition. The goal was to ensure wide exposure to the life and work of Tim Russert. CultureConnect’s tools are all designed with access in mind, specifically on these fronts:

  • Anyone with cell service or internet can access the content
  • Fully responsive design ensures all devices can engage with the content with no downloads required
  • Built in WCAG compliance
  • Multilingual functionality

With responsiveness built into the online exhibition, it can be pushed out from JCU’s website, newsletters, social media, and anywhere else they wish to connect with audiences. It will also be featured on kiosks placed in front of the display case housing Russert’s NBC set and desk, providing an interactive experience for visitors.

Impact and Outcomes

The Tim Russert Virtual Exhibit launched in October 2024, unveiling a dynamic, evolving, and inclusive platform that fostered civic dialogue and deepened community connections. The exhibit launch featured first-hand testimonials from those who knew Russert, including former NBC Justice Correspondent Pete Williams and Russert’s son, Luke Russert.

The project not only honored Tim Russert’s legacy but also provided valuable learning opportunities for students. It demonstrated the power of accessibility and digital platforms in delivering compelling, audience-sensitive narratives. The collaboration between students, seasoned archivists, researchers, and museum experts helped build a talent pipeline for future careers in public history, digital storytelling, and communications.

Since the public launch of the Tim Russert online exhibition, Dr. Malia McAndrew has moved into the role of Director of Teaching Innovation + Enrichment. She is using the Tim Russert archive and digital exhibit to provide students with hands-on digital humanities training, helping them develop both an appreciation for the past and the skills needed for future careers. This initiative also deepens JCU’s partnership with the Meet the Press fellowship and NBC.

Conclusion

Tim Russert: One Man’s Impact on the Nation is just one example of how archivists, technologists, historians, and even students can collaborate to preserve history and share people’s stories with future generations. Axiell was thrilled to provide the innovative technology that makes this history accessible to a global audience. This project serves as an inspiration for future initiatives in public history and digital storytelling.
