Vienna, Austria – 23 March 2026 – Axiell, the global leader in software and services for the cultural sector, is proud to announce that the Austrian Film Museum in Vienna has launched Axiell Collections to modernise the management of its collection of over 35,000 films, documentation, and objects related to film history. The implementation included a complete migration of the Museum’s collections data from their legacy system, with full deployment of Axiell Collections complete in April 2025.
Founded in 1964, the Austrian Film Museum is dedicated to the preservation, research, and promoting the world’s cinematic cultural heritage and Austria’s cultural memory. The adoption of Axiell Collections is part of the Museum’s strategy to make its collection management processes more efficient, improve data security, and broaden access for researchers, professionals and the public.
“By switching to Axiell Collections, the Austrian Film Museum has significantly professionalised the management of its collections,” said Michael Loebenstein, Director of the Austrian Film Museum. “The goal of our museum work is to preserve cultural heritage for the future and make it accessible to people today. This applies not only to the objects themselves but also to the information about them. The switch to Axiell Collections enables us to embrace modern ways of working and future-proof our collection.”
Collaboration was at the heart of making the migration a success. Working closely with stakeholders at the Austrian Film Museum, Axiell’s implementation team leveraged their 15+ years of experience supporting film archives and moving image collections to distil a seemingly complicated project into a clear, rigorous implementation strategy. The project was completed swifty and without major challenges, with Axiell providing comprehensive support at every stage.
“We are delighted to support the Austrian Film Museum in this digital transformation,” said Dylan Graaff, Axiell’s Vice President EMEA & APAC. “This partnership reflects our shared commitment to preserving and enhancing cultural heritage by providing the Museum with the tools they need to achieve this vision.”
With the adoption of Axiell Collections, the Austrian Film Museum joins a global community of film archives and museums enjoying the benefits of a modern collections experience platform. Used by over 800 museums, archives, heritage sites and libraries worldwide, Axiell Collections is designed to meet the specialised needs of cultural institutions. The platform allows institutions to manage their collections from one central place, making processes more efficient and the documentation and tracking of objects more reliable. Axiell Collections also allows film archives to catalogue their collection to FIAF international film standard EN 15907.
